“Awake in the middle of a nightmare” is author Carole Leathem’s description of the realization that her life was becoming very messy. Are You Ready to Find Joy When Life Gets Messy?: How I’m Surviving My Husband’s Struggles With Anxiety, Depression and Suicidal Thoughts is an engaging and transparent account of Carole’s struggles and spiritual growth as she lives out the reality that God’s grace is sufficient. This book is a valuable resource for anyone dealing with mental illness of a loved one or friend. Readers will connect with Carole’s vulnerability and courage. She offers many practical “survival tips and tools” which were vital lifelines during her journey. Her progression of focusing on the journey instead of living in fear is evident in every chapter. Carole doesn’t sugarcoat her pain or the experiences. Instead, she trusts her Lord each day for strength, wisdom, love, and peace.

This book is written with such compassion! This book is written with realness! We all have choices when life becomes excruciating painful. Carole shows us how God had her in His grip and still does! She chooses God! She chooses joy in the middle of life’s messiness. If the script in our mind challenges us we must ask God to help us change it. Find Joy When Live Gets Messy appears on the surface to be an oxymoron. As a friend who stayed in contact with Bill and met with him on different occasions as they diagnosed his illness, I was asked to be one of Carole’s pre-publish readers. This is the story of God's grace playing out in real time through the lives of a couple navigating the ups and downs of mental illness management. It is the definition of a commitment that started with for better or for worse. The raw emotions of life on the edge are trumped only by a loving and merciful God. For those with a friend or family member in this situation, I believe that you will find solace in reading this book.
